“Ça a été”, is the phrase with which Roland Barthes, in Camera Lucida, sums up the essence of photography. That has been. When faced with an image, my first reaction is to confirm the existence, in a given moment of history, of what it is showing me. Barthes did not deny the possibility of the image’s rhetoric, to which he had devoted one of his first texts on photography, but the constancy of what is real asserts itself over the interventions of the photographer, of those who subsequently manipulate the image.
